Hi everyone,

Since the discussion has deviated from the original question from @5th day karma, I wanted recap how you would go about resetting the passphrase that is used to encrypt your synced data stored in your Google Account, and clarify the difference betweenpassphrase and application specific password (only asked if you have enabled 2-step verification)

Reset passphrase
This step will delete all previously synced data (bookmarks, apps, extensions, etc.) that is stored in your Google Account. It will not impact your locally stored data on your computer. To see a full list of data types that can be synced, please refer to Ref[1] below.
1. Log into your Google Dashboard (www.google.com/dashboard)
2. In the Chrome sync section, click on "Stop sync and delete data from Google".
3. Once the process completes, re-enable sync on your primary computer. You can select your own custom passphrase for encryption during setup. Ref[1]

Difference between passphrase and application specific password
Passphrase is a cryptographic key that is used to encrypt your synced data. You can now choose to just encrypt passwords, or encrypt all synced data. By default when setting up sync, your Google Account password is used as the passphrase. You can also choose to use your own custom passphrase instead. You can refer to Ref[2] to find out more.

Application specific password is associated with 2-step verification. If you have opted into 2-step verification, you will be prompted for an app specific password when you set up sync. This is an additional step, and you should only enter the app specific password when prompted for it. You can refer to Ref[3] to find out more about passwords and codes that are associated with 2-step verification.

Hey folks,
If you are seeing a notification on wrench prompting you to update the sync passphrase, you should be able to click it to get more details. After clicking on the message, you should be directed to the Advanced Sync Settings dialog with a highlighted section for Encryption Passphrase. You should see one of the following:
  • “You already have data that is encrypted using a different version of your Google Account password.” If you see this message, enter your previous Google Account password.
  • “You already have data that is encrypted with a passphrase”. If you see this message, enter your custom passphrase.
You can also refer to our troubleshooting guide for some helpful steps.

any word, this is annoying. I don't even remember providing a passphrase and now I am unable to use the sync feature.

It was asking me for a passphrase that I also don't recall providing. Ended up working when I clicked OK with the passphrase field blank.

well....at last here is the solution....

you have to format your operating system completely to recover the problem....even uninstalling & re-installing chrome can't make any changes...u need to do a fresh re-installation of your operating system

i did it & now the problem has been solved...

that should not solve it, the problem is on google's servers, it has the same problem if you start using it on a different computer which will be unaffected by that

I have several times for other reasons, most likely you got a newer version of chrome which has the problem temporarily solved by not using the passphrase.
