Hi everyone,
Since the discussion has deviated from the original question from @5th day karma, I wanted recap how you would go about resetting the passphrase that is used to encrypt your synced data stored in your Google Account, and clarify the difference betweenpassphrase and application specific password (only asked if you have enabled 2-step verification)
Reset passphrase
This step will delete all previously synced data (bookmarks, apps, extensions, etc.) that is stored in your Google Account. It will not impact your locally stored data on your computer. To see a full list of data types that can be synced, please refer to Ref[1] below.
2. In the Chrome sync section, click on "Stop sync and delete data from Google".
3. Once the process completes, re-enable sync on your primary computer. You can select your own custom passphrase for encryption during setup. Ref[1]
Difference between passphrase and application specific password
Passphrase is a cryptographic key that is used to encrypt your synced data. You can now choose to just encrypt passwords, or encrypt all synced data. By default when setting up sync, your Google Account password is used as the passphrase. You can also choose to use your own custom passphrase instead. You can refer to Ref[2] to find out more.
Application specific password is associated with 2-step verification. If you have opted into 2-step verification, you will be prompted for an app specific password when you set up sync. This is an additional step, and you should only enter the app specific password when prompted for it. You can refer to Ref[3] to find out more about passwords and codes that are associated with 2-step verification.
